Don’t look for me cause I’ll be gone ...

Off to Toronto and the World Horror Convention 2007. Internets, please pray for me. Not only am I taking my message board mod, Lauren David; artist, Carrie Rapp, and fellow writer, Debbie Kuhn, we’re stopping to pick up Chesya Burke from the Detroit airport.

They may not let us back into the country. For those looking for me at the con, if I’m not in the bar, I actually have a panel this go around.

Friday - 11:00pm-Midnight: WRITING HORROR IN DIFFERENT CULTURES

(I’m on this one with Lucien Soulban!) This panel sounds vaguely familiar. I can only hope the moderator of this panel has a brilliant best friend who can write their questions for them.

BTW, I’ve got no new news, so I thought I’d share some about some friends of mine:

Speaking of Lucien, WHC should feature the release of Horrors Beyond II from Elder Signs Press and his short story "Serenade." Plus, he’ll showing off his new short story "Songs of the Mother" in the upcoming Dragonlance anthology: Dragons of Time.

Simon Wood just released the mass market paperback edition of his novel "Accidents Waiting to Happen." Considering that I’ve been running around doing my impression of him, I suppose I ought to let folks know he’s now out and about.

Alice Henderson has been nominated for a Scribe Award for her Buffy novel "Portal Through Time." Sure, she’s missing Mo*Con II to pick up awards.

Richard Dansky is featured in a new anthology — "Astounding Hero Tales". John C. Hay just beat me out of an anthology. His story,"Return, My Heart, to the Sea," is scheduled to appear in Sails & Sorcery: Nautical Tales of Fantasy, published by Fantasist Enterprises. However, since I’m also his first reader, I take full credit for its publication

To tide you over, my Intake column last week addressed "why we should pursue multi-cultural church" and this week I remember my time in the "Center for Leadership Development."

Prayer of Emergence

Dear God,

Save me from the pride of having things figured out. The arrogance of thinking I’m doing things the right way. That everyone else is wrong and I’m the only one who sees what went wrong. As if I know how to do things correctly; that somehow, I’m smart or insightful enough to be able to ride in on a high horse of judgment. Save me from my vision of religion and spirituality blinding me from loving others.

Save me from the spirit of bitterness against the church. My frustrations at our inability to be the kind of loving community You called us to be. The shoddy treatment I may have experienced at the hands. The let-downs and disappointments - it’s easy to focus on the Church’s shortcomings. Just as it’s easy to forget that the Church is us and You don’t focus on our short-comings. Let me remember all of the wrongs the Church has committed in Your Name, let every experience sear my heart so that they won’t be repeated on my watch. Help me to remember that the Church is Your bride, however numerous her faults, and how you’ve chosen to bring about Your kingdom.

Save me from the spirit of hearing sermons “so and so” should be hearing or reading books “so and so” should read, but help me to realize that I’m the one who should be hearing and reading. Help me to do my part to inflict less damage into the world. Remind me that I am here to love “those people”, too. Remind me that too often I’ve been a part of the problem.

Save me from my own hubris of the rightness of my spiritual journey. Help me as I work out my journey. Reveal Your Word to me in a fresh way so that I may know you better. Let my questions draw me closer to the reality of You. Let my life reflect Your love and healing. Let my actions help bring reconciliation.

Prayerfully, I’d settle for at least being on the right track.

Christus Victor and Tony Dungy

Just a month or so ago, I was struck by how the fans adored Tony Dungy. At the Super Bowl Victory rally, two of the people the crowd wanted to hear most from were the two who least wanted the microphone or attention: Tony Dungy and Marvin Harrison. Coach Dungy, a man who walked in quiet dignity as well as with pride and humility, received more cheers than even Peyton Manning. And the thousands of fans who filled the dome, after seeing him suffer setback after seeming setback, we shared in his final victory. We were united and reveled in the sense of a mission fulfilled.

To me, it was a picture of Christus Victor, Christ the Victor, the passion story of God triumphing over the powers of this world and liberating humanity from the bondage of sin, death, and the unseen spiritual forces. That was then, this is now. Here’s a reminder of why Christ couldn’t get elected to political office:


CARMEL, Ind. -- Colts coach Tony Dungy said he knows some people would prefer him to steer clear of the gay marriage debate, but he used a speech Tuesday night to clearly stake out his position. Dungy told more than 700 people at the Indiana Family Institute's banquet that he agrees with that organization's position supporting a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. "I appreciate the stance they're taking, and I embrace that stance," Dungy said.

Well, he certainly stepped into it now, testing the strength of his popularity among his fans. Several debates rage on around this issue, but the one that fascinates me is the idea of whether he is abusing his position by speaking on matters so far astray from why he has risen to celebrity status. We all know he has a right to say whatever he wants, the question is “should he?”

Just because someone becomes famous does that obligate them to stop being who they are? What good is a larger pulpit if you don’t use it? Actors/celebrities do it all the time to bring attention to their pet causes (to quote the great philosopher, Homer Simpson: “Rock stars. Is there anything they don’t know?”). So why should athletes and coaches be above this?

In this era of carefully controlled images and public personas, Tony Dungy is simply being who he is, does what he does, and believes what he believes. We don’t have to agree, but he is staying true to himself, however unpopular his stance may be. This might not be an abuse of his pulpit as much as his higher profile causing him to be under more of a microscope, with his every word and action parsed.

To a degree, the man will be largely bulletproof and this will all blow over. Let’s face it, in our world, a Super Bowl victory adds a bit of a Teflon coating. I’m just happy no one from the team was in the news for breaking the law. This week.

Friday Night Date Place - Meeting the Folks

I missed out on the tradition of a dowry. The closest thing to a dowry I got was the assumption of my wife’s debt (I can’t begin to convey to you how much my wife will hate that joke). Ritual and tradition are important parts of relationships. It’s one reason why we celebrate anniversaries. They help ground us in remembrance of a greater story. One of the rites of passage for a relationship is the dreaded meeting of the folks.

In this case, the story that this rite of passage dives us into is that of your significant other’s life. Their story began with their parents and to a great degree, the person they will become is foreshadowed in them. Meeting the parents can be a dreaded rite of passage in many relationships, especially if the child is either close to their parents, seeks their approval/values their opinion, or simply wants everyone to like each other.

[Granted, interracial relationships can sometimes have specific bumps to navigate. My wife is lucky that I even thought about bringing another white woman home to meet my mom. The last one I brought home actually thought the line “I think my family used to own your family” was a good conversation breaker. I’m surprised that my one-day-going-to-be-my-wife didn’t walk out on the spot with people flipping off each other, food being thrown (everything from chicken wings to rolls to ice), people eating from each other’s plate and yelling so loud it couldn’t possibly just be casual conversation.

When I had to meet her family, it was like navigating a Bosnian minefield. She had me over for Easter dinner. Upon my arrival and introduction as “a friend,” her sister went “mmm” and walked out. Her mother, trying to bond with me, spent the afternoon telling me about how I came from “a spiritual people.” The entire time, my one-day-going-to-be-my-wife stared over at me with eyes pleading “please be good. For me.”]

Forgive the generalization, but parents want to know that their children, daughters especially, will be taken care of, provided for, or otherwise will just be happy. The meeting is simply a chance for everyone to know what they are getting into. Though many parents might smile at your antics to be polite, or otherwise try to engage you, you can believe that at their first opportunity, they will start whispering in their daughters ear about whether she knows what she’s getting into.

It’s important to meet the family and observe the dynamic in action. This is the laboratory that your special someone was created in. The dynamic you are involved with because when you date someone, you date their families too. Treat them seriously, because they are a rite of passage for the budding seriousness of your relationship. Like first dates, first impressions count (though, with time, they can be overcome).

Next time, because I made someone a promise, we are “meeting the kids.”

Too Little Moral Outrage

Do you ever feel on the verge of articulating something but can’t quite get there? I was reading an interview with Warren Ellis about the premise of his new series, Black Summer, and the idea behind it got me thinking:

It's been said that morality is defined by perspective, not by a universal moral code that all are meant to follow, with arguments for consequentialism and deontology often present. After all, one can murder in self defense and walk free, while another who murders in the heat of the moment is to be punished — there are certainly societal perspectives that influence how we view seemingly similar actions. With that in mind, how does one define a hero and the limits to which it is acceptable to break the rules for what is "right?"

In our age, we have a greater desire for truthfulness yet we seem to have a greater difficulty discerning truth. We’re asking questions like “what is truth?” and “whose truth?”; distrustful of anything approaching a meta-narrative. Sometimes I wonder if we ought to be asking questions examining a deconstruction of our selfishness. That all of our questioning of God and society’s mores boil down to us simply wanting to rationalize the things we want to do anyway.

Cynicism has clung to the coattails of our post-modern spirit. A “throw your hands up” mentality has infected us. Why bother with being engaged or engaging in anything? There’s nothing you can do about it and nothing’s going to change anyway?

Similarly, we’re losing the idea that we are responsible moral agents. Things are everyone else’s fault: your parents, your co-workers or boss, the government’s, society’s, other races.

*sigh*

Do you know what really started all of this philosophical angst? The news. Last week, a father stood accused of stabbing his 11-month old in the back then tossing him out the car window. This occurred down the road from me. There’s nothing like the horrors of this world to make you contemplate the “why?” questions. The collective conscience of our society is seared and we are appropriately outraged. Yet fewer and fewer things seem to outrage us, until, sadly, only the more heinous acts of brutality stir us to action.

So I can’t help but think that when you lose the idea of truth, you lose the need for redemption and repentance. There’s no need for either when nothing (or very little) defines what is wrong. A consequence of that, however, is that you lose the ability to have moral outrage. Since there is so little that we can all agree on that is “wrong”, we are left with an uninformed societal conscience.

Maybe there is an evolution-driven imperative that says we ought to love one another, but I’m no philosopher. I’m just a guy wondering why we do the things we do and if there is a better way, a moral obligation at the very least, to behave in a better way. I cling to the idea of hope. I’ve been wrestling with the idea of the Problem of Good: In a world of accidents and natural selection, why is there so much laughter, beauty, love, and need to praise? In other words, I’m left asking more questions.

Friday Night Date Place - To Date or Not to Date

I had a pair of Sunday School teachers, the unofficial leaders of the Singles Group in a church I used to attend, who were always encouraging us to date and get married. Two things fueled this, I suspect: 1) we had declared ourselves “Bachelors til the Rapture” (thus having a bit too much of a “thou dost protest too much” feel about us - especially since all of us are now married); and 2) they just wanted us to be happy. They liked us, saw all the good things about us, and were concerned that we might prematurely be cutting ourselves off from potential fulfillment. They didn’t want us to miss out.

Be they family, friends, co-workers, or folks at church, singles often have to suffer through the slings and arrows of well-intentioned though insensitive, intrusive commentary that was rarely asked for. To be fair, most of it does spring from concern (mixed with people’s general busy-body nature). It’s a shame that the stance of not dating has to be defended. It’s bad enough that the choice to remain single so often has to be defended from those who put family on an altar. However, I’ve come to realize that fundamentalists come in all stripes and there are those people who can only be described as “dating fundies.”

One of my first blogs in the Friday Night Date Place attempted to answer the question “why date?” I’m mean, really, why bother? Why get involved in the game, the silliness, the drama? Why put yourself through the emotional roller coaster over and over again? Why invest or risk so much of your self-esteem, self-image, and personal happiness on the possibility of going out with someone? Why do we end up defining ourselves, our well being, and our worth through the eyes of another?

The short answer then boiled down to us being wired for intimacy. However, just because we are wired for intimacy doesn’t mean that we have to date. For some people, the choice to start dating depends on the answer to a different question: are you ready to get married?

Each person has to answer these questions for themselves. Not everyone is always in a place to date. Sometimes it’s emotionally, not wanting to put themselves through the risk and vulnerability that dating so often requires. Sometimes it’s their place in life. With school, work, ministires/volunteering, and other things going on (especially if they have plenty of friends to sustain their need for intimacy), dating isn’t that much of a priority. Regardless, the key is that they have to answer these questions for themselves. They shouldn’t have to be held to some societal standard that says “you have to date”. It wasn’t that long ago that we did things via arranged marriages and let me tell you, I barely trust my parents to pick out my socks much less a life mate.

“Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am.” I Corinthians 7:8

Ah, the singles defense verse. Do you know what I often hear to that verse? “It’s rare that this verse applies to anyone.” Let’s be real: we don’t believe this verse. Many of us don’t think ANYONE is called to be single (or if we do, we believe in these “called” single people like we do any other mythical creature. You know, they may be out there but no one has ever seen one.). If people aren’t dating or show no interest in dating, we don’t think “maybe God has called them to singleness.” We don’t think “maybe they aren’t in a place to be dating now.” What do we think?

There must be something wrong with them.

Well-intentioned concern still can lead to awkward intrusions. However, the risk of having people in your life is the risk of the occasional awkward intrusion. But we really ought to consider what messages we are sending to people with the questions we ask and the “concern” that we show. It’s bad enough that our culture has turned us into “dating fundies”. Even worse that the church has sanctified this to the point that singleness is a condition one needs to be saved from.

It is possible to be a fulfilled single, joining in the mission of Christ, without dating or, *gasp*, being married.

And I don’t believe in the Tooth Fairy.

An N-Bomb Ban & Other News

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City symbolically banned use of the word nigger on Wednesday, the latest step in a campaign that hopes to expunge the most vile of racial slurs from hip hop music and television.

AYour momma=s teeth so yellow, when she smiles, cars yield.@

The other day I was at my barber shop and I overheard some boys casually telling Ayour momma@ jokes and calling each other nigger. Now, I was never good at playing the dozensBthat Ayour momma@ insult gameBand my yellow teeth line was pretty much all I kept in reserve. However, as I sat there listening to them go at it, I couldn=t help but think about how quick we are to drop the N-bomb on one another.

The dozens can be traced back to the days of slavery. As the slaves were being sold on the auction block, eventually the slave dealers got to the slaves who didn=t make it through the middle passage so well. Because they had some defect or another, they were sold by Athe dozen.@ This is the legacy that we=ve not only passed down, but internalized to the point of making a game out of it.

The same can be said of the word Anigger.@

Last week, New York symbolically banned the word as a way of saying Aenough=s enough.@ The word has become so ubiquitous in our language and music that it is woven into the fabric of who we are as a community. Some people argue that using the word saps it of its power, that by using it we were reclaiming the power of it from those who had used it against us.

It=s gotten to the point where we can call one another a nigger with a familial familiarity, term of endearment and brotherhood on one hand; and then act shocked when we=ve sent a mixed message to the millions of white folks who buy the hip hop CDs and sing along, repeat the routines of their favorite comedians, or who want to hang out with Atheir boys@ in that way.

No, defending the use of that word only rationalizes the internalization of hatred. It perpetuates the legacy of hate, in one powerful word encompassing the history of slave ships to Jim Crow. The word is the penultimate form of dehumanizing, the spit-in-your-face kind of assault to one=s sense of dignity and self-worth.

I think of the word like I do Confederate flags: don=t ban them - they should be treated like museum pieces: remembered, studied, preserved, but put away.

Mo*Con II: The Intersection of Faith, Race, and Art (Updated 4/5/07)

Yes, I'm doing it again.

The mission statement of the Dwelling Place states that we exist to help people resist empty ways of life by becoming fully human in the way of Jesus. We desire to be a refuge or sanctuary, a place of rest and freedom for people to be themselves, where we connect with God and one another by joining Jesus’ mission to bless the world. To that end, we believe art is an important part of who we are and should be valued.

Just as each one of us is a masterpiece in progress and creation is continuing in us, so we desire to keep generating new creative possibilities. We long to be students awakened to the process of learning to create in the way of the Master Artist, Jesus, who saw lilies, children, mustard sees, plowing, vineyards, and housework as indicators of a wider truth. Art is never for its own sake, but people’s sake. We believe that art should be engaged with and in its own way explores truth - and we shouldn’t be afraid of truth. Another thing we want to be is a safe place for folks to work our their spirituality and ask questions.

About continuing conversations. Which brings me to Wrath James White and Brian Keene and our continuing mission to test the boundaries of what we say we’re about.

Regular readers of my blog may be familiar with Wrath James White. He has guest blogged for me, I have reviewed him, and have interviewed him (part I and part II). His blog has opened up a new audience for him. And folks who know us or are aware of our blogs, style, politics, and personalities are stunned that the two of us are friends. I explain it to them in one word: respect. We don’t try to convert each other and we don’t have the arrogance of certainty about our positions. In a nutshell, we believe what we believe, we can argue why we believe, but we’re open to the possibility that we may not be right and are willing and able to listen and learn from each other.

Adding to the conversation will be Gary A. Braunbeck and Lucy A. Snyder. Those familiar with their backgrounds will know exactly why I want them added to the conversation (and note that I used the word conversation: Gary and I know better than to argue with Wrath and Lucy).

Keene’s determined to see us all go down in flames, serving as Moderator and general provocateur.

"That's My King!"

Something to stir your heart first thing in the morning. The late Dr. S. M. Lockeridge, a pastor from San Diego, California said these words in a sermon in Detroit in 1976 (which can be heard via, of course, youtube):

My King was born King. The Bible says He's a Seven Way King. He's the King of the Jews - that's an Ethnic King. He's the King of Israel - that's a National King. He's the King of righteousness. He's the King of the ages. He's the King of Heaven. He's the King of glory. He's the King of kings and He is the Lord of lords. Now that's my King.

Well, I wonder if you know Him. Do you know Him? Don't try to mislead me. Do you know my King? David said the Heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork. My King is the only one of whom there are no means of measure that can define His limitless love. No far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of the shore of His supplies. No barriers can hinder Him from pouring out His blessing.

He's enduringly strong. He's entirely sincere. He's eternally steadfast. He's immortally graceful. He's imperially powerful. He's impartially merciful. That's my King. He's God's Son. He's the sinner's savior. He's the centerpiece of civilization. He stands alone in Himself. He's honest. He's unique. He's unparalleled. He's unprecedented. He's supreme. He's pre-eminent. He's the grandest idea in literature. He's the highest personality in philosophy. He's the supreme problem in higher criticism. He's the fundamental doctrine of historic theology. He's the carnal necessity of spiritual religion. That's my King.

He's the miracle of the age. He's the superlative of everything good that you choose to call Him. He's the only one able to supply all our needs simultaneously. He supplies strength for the weak. He's available for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He saves. He's the Almighty God who guides and keeps all his people. He heals the sick. He cleanses the lepers. He forgives sinners. He discharged debtors. He delivers the captives. He defends the feeble. He blesses the young. He serves the unfortunate. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent and He beautifies the meek. That's my King.

Do you know Him? Well, my King is a King of knowledge. He's the wellspring of wisdom. He's the doorway of deliverance. He's the pathway of peace. He's the roadway of righteousness. He's the highway of holiness. He's the gateway of glory. He's the master of the mighty. He's the captain of the conquerors. He's the head of the heroes. He's the leader of the legislatures. He's the overseer of the overcomers. He's the governor of governors. He's the prince of princes. He's the King of kings and He's the Lord of lords. That's my King.

His office is manifold. His promise is sure. His light is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His love never changes. His Word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. I wish I could describe Him to you . . . but He's indescribable. That's my King. He's incomprehensible, He's invincible, and He is irresistible.

I'm coming to tell you this, that the heavens of heavens can't contain Him, let alone some man explain Him. You can't get Him out of your mind. You can't get Him off of your hands. You can't outlive Him and you can't live without Him. The Pharisees couldn't stand Him, but they found out they couldn't stop Him. Pilate couldn't find any fault in Him. The witnesses couldn't get their testimonies to agree about Him. Herod couldn't kill Him. Death couldn't handle Him and the grave couldn't hold Him. That's my King.

He always has been and He always will be. I'm talking about the fact that He had no predecessor and He'll have no successor. There's nobody before Him and there'll be nobody after Him. You can't impeach Him and He's not going to resign. That's my King! That's my King!

300 - A Review

There is an old story about a man named Gideon who once had to free his nation from the massive army of his Midianite oppressors. He could have assembled quite an army of his own, but instead his God told him to whittle down his numbers. In the end, he ended up with around 300 men against completely overwhelming odds, so that should they be victorious, the credit couldn’t go to them, but to the God in whom they trusted.

At the Battle of Thermopylae, the Hot Gates, with the Spartan army of 300 amassed against the “millions” of the Persian forces, we see a parallel story. Based on another work by one man movie generator, Frank Miller (Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One - which was the basis for Batman Begins - Sin City, Elektra), 300 adds another exhibit in the case of him being one of the most influential comic book creators of all time.*


In a way, 300 is like watching the movie Titanic: you know the ending before the movie starts, so you’re most interested in how you get there. The gorgeous cinematography painted dark, brooding landscapes straight from Lynn Varley’s palette. Every shot infused with either slow-motion drama or foreshadowing portents, the movie follows one man paying the cost for the freedom of his world.

“What should a free man do?” –Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey)

Baptized in the fire of combat from an early age, King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) knew who he was, his purpose, and mission from the beginning. Constantly tested on his journey of discipleship to form his Spartan reserve, he was thoroughly a Spartan, a warrior-king, as well as an idealist. He often found himself at odds with his own government–personified by Dominic West’s (The Wire) Theron, whose pockets jingle with (30 pieces?) of Persian coin–because since “No Spartan, slave or king, is above the law.” Torn between their time-honored traditions and his duty to Spartan precepts - Leonidas broke their laws to serve a greater law, a greater way: “Never retreat, never surrender.” Choosing instead to pursue the spirit of the law, obeying the values of honor, duty, and glory.

“Trust not in men. Honor the gods.” –Oracle

Standing in opposition to him is the Persian god-king, Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro, magnificently chewing any scenery he draws near).

Xerxes is “the accuser”, the one who prowls about like a roaring lion devouring all the kingdoms of the world as his own. Though he claims that it is his world, he betrays a fatal flaw - hubris. Xerxes temptation of Leonidas was simple: all King Leonidas would have to offer is a token of earth and water or to kneel at Xerxes’ feet. A simple gesture that would spare his life, the life of his men, and the life–and way of life–of his fellow Spartans. It was a three-fold temptation as Leonidas was: 1) tempted by his own desires (women and money); tempted by putting his God to the test (going his own way because his gods had failed); and tempted by promises of power (the kingdom would be his as warlord).

Yet Leonidas remains firm ( “there’s no room for softness. Not in Sparta. No room for weakness.”). Unfortunately, he finds his Judas in Ephialtes (Andrew Tiernan), a hunchbacked figure not capable of fighting alongside Leonidas and his men and not being able to live up to what he thought would redeem him, he chooses to side with Xerxes.

“Freedom isn’t free at all. It comes at the highest cost. The cost of blood.” –Queen Gorgo

Even knowing of the betrayal, that all was lost, King Leonidas accepted his fate. Death in service to the kingdom, three days in the hot gates of hell, was the price of freedom. Until the final shaft pierces him and he dies in a cruciform position, he remained a warrior-king whose message and way of life caused many to choose to follow him into battle. His death lead to the unification of a people and the movement of a greater idea for how to live.

Leonidas is a tragic Greek hero, one who lives by a mad hope for future glory even in the face of immortal darkness. It’s the Gospel he clings to. The gospel message is about accepting freedom. It is about a God-king humbling himself, becoming poor and weak - human - in order to free the oppressed from poverty and powerlessness. He becomes a victim in our place (at the hands of a corrupt power no less) and transforms the condition of bondage. This Gospel speaks to the disinherited, the poor, the disenfranchised , the oppression of the weak by the powerful. The gospel is an offense to the rich and powerful. It’s the death of their ideas of wealth and power, those priorities. We can’t be afraid of freedom.

300 tells the story of their victory. The story isn’t their death, but how they chose to live. A complete testosterone-fest, in the spirit of Gladiator, though more brutal and visceral an experience. Frank Miller’s art and dialogue once again leaps from the screens. 300’s poetically-intricate battle scenes had me leaving the theater ready to shout at everyone around me and march on a neighboring city.


*For the sake of staying focused, I’m going to choose to ignore the whole Asia, Middle East, and Africa united can’t beat even a handful of Europeans implications (and the whole, as a friend called 300 “Frank Miller’s misogynistic phallo-centrism finds an idealized output in Sparta”).

Ultimate Powers - A Review

THE STORY: The Fantastic Four’s leader, Reed Richards, has accidentally punched a hole into an adjacent universe in a desperate bid to gain the knowledge he needs to cure his friend Ben Grimm—The Thing. But something has come through the aperture from a realm known as the Supremeverse: The Squadron Supreme! They are angry and here to arrest young Reed for high crimes against their world.


I’m not going to pretend that this isn’t little more than an excuse for another Ultimate crossover event that doesn’t want to use the title “Secret Wars” or “Contest of Champions”. Assembled for our entertainment is the Ultimate Fantastic Four, the Ultimates, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men all versus Squadron Supreme.

In other words, it’s a battle of alternate reality heroes (since the Ultimate version of the Marvel superhero universe is free from the constraints of the 40+ years of continuity baggage and the Squadron Supreme storyline takes place in its own “real” universe). Nothing that happens here has any consequence for the main Marvel Universe, so let the havoc begin.

Once again, such a spectacle is brought to us by “he who seems to be writing every Marvel event title” (Civil War, House of M), Brian Michael Bendis. What makes Bendis so great is his dialogue (Powers is one of my personal favorites), so the critics of his “talking heads” style won’t be completely silenced here. However, this book does seem to want to show that he can write the great super-hero conflagration scenario: “Hey! I don’t know you, but you’re here in spandex and seem threatening–I’m sure having nothing to do with the ego of being used to being the head power in charge–so rather than stop and ask questions, allow us to punch first.”

That being said, who doesn’t love reading super heroes fight each other? How often do our conversations discuss what super-hero could beat what super-villain? Never, because the heroes always beat the villains, that’s their raison d’etre. No, our discussions are “Thing vs. Hulk” or “Captain America vs. Batman”. And the Ultimates vs the Squadron Supreme basically allows them to have a Marvel (home of Spider-Man, Hulk, and Captain America) vs. DC (home of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman) fight (since the Squadron Supreme are basically Marvel analogues of DC characters) without the legal entanglements.

If there was a spiritual touchpoint with this comic, it would be unintended consequences of our actions. Reed Richards was unaware of the repercussions of his on-going research. In fact, they were fueled by good intentions, as he was trying to find a cure for his friend, Ben Grimm (the Thing). Unfortunately, ignorance doesn’t excuse the actions, and though it may mitigate them, there is still a price to be paid.

Is there any artistic merit to Ultimate Powers? No. Is there some great moral theme or story being explored? No. Is Brian Michael Bendis going to take too long to tell this story? Yes. Was this contrived more as a marketing idea rather than compelling narrative? Yes (another lesson learned from Secret Wars). Are we going to buy it? Of course - it’s fan favorites vs. fan favorites. Who cares what the set up is as long as we get to the fighting. It’s the equivalent of a popcorn movie - enjoy it for what it is.

Friday Night Date Place - Deal Breaker

I’ve had to watch many a relationship implode - usually mine, though if nothing else, I’ve read folks go all “emo” on their blogs after their break ups. With rare exception, the break ups didn’t happen without warning. There were storm warning sirens that probably went off that probably went unheeded. However, I want to look at the flip side of things, from the perspective of the potential breaker, for a minute to consider when should a person decide that things aren’t working out.

If you think a relationship is heading towards marriage, you have to start taking long haul considerations into account - analyzing the relationship in terms of spending the rest of your life with them. Deciding to break up isn’t easy, it’s like you have to consider the lemon rule, that point when you’ve invested enough into a car and you’d be better off buying a new one. At what point have you wasted enough time pouring yourself into the relationship? At what point have you cried enough tears over them? At what point do you realize you’d be better off (risking being) alone?

I think back on my sister’s previous relationship before she got married. I wasn’t all that impressed with him, I kept waiting for him to step to folks like a grown up, but I tried to like him. She had to make up her own mind about how much of his nonsense she was ready to put up with. For the rest of her life. She had to figure out what she couldn’t live with and a few things factored into the equation was how he dealt with:

1) Jobs. The main thing married couples fight about is money. Someone has to work and pay for everything and you can’t afford to be tied to a mooch who wants to smoke weed and play video games. Nor to someone who can’t keep a job for a week or a month or two, then quit (especially if everything is “everyone else’s fault”. Come on, you always have to answer to someone and more often than not, that someone will be a jerk. You don’t always have the luxury of popping off to them when you don’t get your way).

The only analogy I can think of is about hitching your wagon to an erratic truck. If that truck has no problems driving off a cliff to indulge whatever tantrum it wants to have, then you may want to take that into consideration. Stability is important to relationships, even moreso if you are thinking about adding kids to the equations.

2) Homebody. By “homebody” I mean living in their in mom’s basement. By homebody I mean making a home on their couch. In fact, it points to the greater problem of being directionless and unambitious. You can’t make someone find themselves, their way in life, or figure out what they want to do with their lives. Basically, you can’t make them grow up - and you shouldn’t have to. These are things a person needs to do for themselves.

3) Kids. Do they have kids that they (already) don’t take care of?

4) Drama. Some people are victims of their own bad decision making, (tacitly or not) preferring the emotional roller coaster, the constant ups and downs, of life. And they want you along for the ride. A couple years ago, I went to King’s Island. That’s when I realized “you know what? I’m a grown ass man. I don’t need the thrill of being tossed around, dropped, and twirled upside down for my excitement.” (And then I spent the day at Spongebob 3-D, but I digress).

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:1-3

After making all due consideration, you have been gifted with common sense. You can’t stay with someone out of pity or wanting to spare their feelings. You can’t stay because your parents or their parents or your friends really like them (or the two of you as a couple). At some point, you have to take care of you - your sanity, the stability you want for you and your family.

The thing is, everyone draws lines for themselves. I can’t impose standards of what I would put up with on anyone else. My relationship with my wife has its own rhythm and considerations, and I can’t assume it would be the normative for anyone else. So draw your own lines in the sand, so that you know when you’ve reached the limits of how much of them you can accept. Better to know what's a deal breaker, before you get to that marriage step. Once you figure out your standards and what you deserve, you need to believe it.

You don’t have to settle, especially from fear of being alone.

Heroes - A Review

“Hero Worship”

I’ll save you the trouble of reading this entire review: I love the show Heroes. It might be the best fantasy show, and one of the best serials, currently on the air. Like Desperate Housewives and Lost, there is a mystery at the heart of it. Even when the show occasionally meanders, there is still a forward momentum to the show, unlike some serials (*cough* LOST *cough*).

Mining somewhat familiar territory, from comics like Rising Stars or other shows like The 4400, Tim Kring (Crossing Jordan) brings us this nerd’s fantasy that plays to our daydreams of getting super powers (flight, telepathy, regeneration, teleportation), of being special, and joining in the mission of fighting the good fight. Ordinary people of all races, nations, and walks of life, from cheerleaders, cops, nurses, to single moms, develop super powers. If the show captures a comic book spirit precisely, it should: Jeph Loeb (Batman: The Long Halloween) is an executive producer. Ironically, in this age of a mixed bag of comic book translations, it takes a television show to remind us of what makes comic books great and why they touch such a cord in our culture.

Heroes builds its own mythology, but is accessible despite the number of (geek) insider jokes. It’s obvious that the show is about mission and community. The show even has it’s own guide, fan favorite, Japanese time-space bender Hiro (Masi Oka), who essentially narrates the heroes journey.

“It’s our heroic journey. You don’t have to have superpowers to be a hero.” –Hiro

None of us are living up to our full abilities. We have huge potential that sin has taken away [think of sin as human error, a failure to fulfill human potential (and thus sin becomes that which dehumanizes us)]. In fact, a lot of us would rather believe the lie that we are not different, that we are not special. We then get caught up in empty ways of doing life, going through the daily grind, going through the motions, un-engaged and missing the point of life.

Our journey begins by appreciate who you are and your own gifts or, as the Cheerleader’s mom puts it, “you should know who you are and know that it’s enough cause who you are is special.” We are Eikons of God, created in His image to relate to Him and to others. Created for a purpose.

“Do you ever get the feeling like you were meant to do something extraordinary ... I’m not talking about what you do but who you are. Being special.” –Peter

This is the crux of the show Heroes. “Every hero must learn his purpose. Then he’ll be tested and called to greatness,” Hiro tells us. As each character figures out their gift, they have to then choose how they want to use what they’ve been blessed with. Some will choose to work together to succeed in safe guarding mankind.

“You told me many times how lost you felt. Before it all started. This is what you’ve been waiting for. Be the one we need.” –Hiro

W.E.B. DuBois used to speak of a Talented Tenth, that group of us who steps forward to be leaders. Heroes speaks to this same idea. How there is this called out group of people specially gifted with a sense of shared mission. This ekklesia, we’ll call them, seeks a sense of community and meaning in life, choosing to use their gifts to impact our world. To be selfless and fight injustice. In effect they become an alternative society to the ways of this world, a saving presence working toward the redemption of the entire world.

“That you are the instrument of a flawless design. That all of life may hang in the balance ... in the end, all that matters is love.” –Charlie (Jayma Mays)

In a world filled with pain, when we so often feel as if no one looks out for one another, there are people that care, who want to make a difference. Sometimes we get so caught up in the rituals and routines of our lives that we lose sight of the fact that we are to be part of the solution, not the problem. Where a bunch of ordinary nobodies, men and women living and caught up in a story, accept the mandate of building a sense of community, loving each other, and serving the world. We are to be missional.

“You do not choose your destiny, it chooses you. And those who knew you before fate took you by the hand cannot understand the depths of the changes inside.” –Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy)

Heroes focuses on the human-ness of special people, their gifts being extensions of who they are. The telepathic cop (Alias' Greg Grunberg) wants to be able to better communicate with his wife. The over-protected cheerleader Claire (Hayden Panettiere) now can’t be hurt. Nurse Peter (Gilmore Girls’ Milo Ventimiglia) who wants connection with his family has the ability to draw on any power he is near. His politically ambitious brother Nathan (Judging Amy’ Adrian Pasdar) gets to fly. The show is shot beautifully, often looking like fluid comic book panels. Each week I dread coming to those three little words that conclude each episode:

Battlestar Galactica: The Mini-Series - A Review

“Ruminations on Wrath”

The original Battlestar Galactica premiered on Sept. 17, 1978 on ABC on a wave of Star Wars mania. The show became a syndicated cult, though cancelled after a year, returning to television in the sequel Galactica 1980. I barely remember the original series, moreso Galactica 1980 (which I remember fondly, but I was also going through an inexplicable ChiPs phase). Still I remember enough so that once the new show came along, the names were familiar and I found myself missing the silver robots with the scanning red eye.

In the re-imagining the original series, Starbuck is now a woman (Katie Sackhoff), the Cylons look like humans, and the special effects are a little better. Some of the names are familiar and the show still follows the ragtag fleet of ships that search for that mystical colony known as Earth. To get caught up, humans created Cylons to ease their work load and, par for every robot dependent dystopian future, the robots turn against them. The two races go to their neutral corners for 40 years only to have the new generation of Cylons mount an attack that nearly wipes out humanity. This new model of Cylons, actually there are 12 Cylon models who are indistinguishable from human beings, have the computer equivalent of souls: when their bodies die, their consciousness is transferred to another body.

For such a sci-fi hardened show, Battlestar Galactica, much like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is undergirded by religious thought. In fact, you’ll notice a lot of Biblical imagery in the show: the 40 year silence of the Cylons; the twelve colonies, the same number as the number of tribes of ancient Israel, are nearly wiped out in a surprise attack by the Cylons - a disaster of Biblical proportions; the survivors wander the wilderness of space like a lost tribe in search of the Promise Land.

Echoing many of our recent tragedies, the Cylons are a natural disaster of sorts, set in motion/made worse by the actions of man. One of many spiritual themes, including the prophetic language and the need for faith to sustain them in their journey, however, I keep coming back to the apocalyptic terror that sets the series in motion: the idea of God’s retribution upon man. As one of the Cylons, apparently the instruments of God’s wrath, puts it, “When you get right down to it, humanity is not a pretty race. I mean we’re only one step a way from beating each other with clubs like savages, fighting over scraps of meat. Maybe the Cylons are God’s retribution for our many sins.” The idea of the Cylons as an expression of God’s wrath demands further examination.

Number Six: God wanted me to help you.
Dr. Baltar: Right. He spoke to you did He? You had a chat?
Number Six: He didn’t speak to me in a little voice. And you don’t have to mock my faith.
Dr. Baltar: I’m sorry. Im just not very religious.
Number Six: Does it bother you that I am?
Dr. Baltar: It puzzles me that an intelligent, attractive woman such as yourself should be taken in by all that mysticism and superstition.

One of the first question people ask in the face of tragedies this is “why?” And it is a perfectly reasonable question to ask: how could a good God allow such evil things to happen? Many chalk such natural disasters up to this simply being a consequence of living in a “fallen world” (that because of Adam’s sin, nothing about God’s created order is as it should be. The violence and evil we experience is the result of our alienation from God and the alienation from creation itself). At best this is an incomplete, and wholly unsatisfactory, depiction of things.

“Must be hard for you. To have something you created twisted and misused. It must be horrible.” –said to Dr. Baltar

Dr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis), the height of human weakness. All pride, intellect, and self-sufficiency, who keeps managing to do wrong because he lacks any spine to stand up and do what’s right. He inadvertently helps the Cylons by taking one as his lover, Number Six (Tricia Helfer), and then continuing to “see” her once he’s one of the straggling survivors. Still, his is the perspective of “the Creator.” We often forget how God grieves over us.

Before the judgment of the flood, we read "Then Yahweh saw the wickedness of man? and Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in his heart" (Genesis 6:5-6) ... Passages could be multiplied that speak of God's deep feelings of love, joy, delight, sorrow, grief, and even anger in regard to his creation. Finally, God's ultimate revelation in the person of Christ indicates that God is a God who feels deeply ... The climax of his ministry has been labeled by theologians as "The Passion" because of the intense suffering Christ experienced on behalf of others.


“Don’t you understand? God is love.” –Number Six

The image of God as both good and severe, a God that fit readily into our (Old Testament kind of) paradigm, was gradually replaced with that of a one-dimensional, only-good God, as if Love is the only dimension of who He is. So of course people couldn’t reconcile how a supposedly good God allowed horrible things to happen, especially to the most innocent among us. We forget passages like “Make sure you stay alert to these qualities of gentle kindness and ruthless severity that exist side by side in God” (Romans 11:22a, The Message version).

“It’s not enough to just live. You have to have something to live for.” –Commander Adama

Disasters are horrific and sometimes bring out the worst in some of us (Dr. Baltar’s continual concern about how the Cylons nearly wiping out humanity might tarnish his legacy); however, they can also cause us to pull together in ways few other things can (causing ordinary people to rise to the occasion). They cause us to shake ourselves and take stock of our “problems” by forcing us to step outside of our daily complaints. Tragedies bring out our generosity as we reevaluate what is truly important, how much many of us have, and how good we really have things.

“The rag tag fugitive fleet” live in hope of finding a (new) Earth. Living in light of hope, we act - being witnesses for that hope and the first ones to protest the violent order of the way things are. We draw near to the suffering, continue to ask “why?”, and then act in compassion. That is our response to how could God allow this: be the arms of God in comforting the victims of suffering.

Apocalyptic literature has always had a place in genre fiction, from The Stand to Left Behind, we’ve been fascinated with end of the world scenarios. Much about the new Battlestar Galactica resonates with us. It builds on our real life fears of nuclear holocaust (see Jericho) and EMP technology crippling us (convenience leading to our downfall is an apocalyptic terror that rings with a different tenor in a post-911 world).

Though I’m a fan of Babylon 5 and Farscape, Battlestar Galactica is not your typical brand of space opera. Going against the grain of CGI-heavy effects (and the million dollars per episode budget that led to its demise the first go around), the new Battlestar Galactica is more low-tech and, more importantly, alien-free. Without the crutch of new aliens to encounter week to week, it focuses on the human drama and real, all-too-human conflict. It’s smartly written, though sometimes a bit too self-conscious of its philosophical underpinnings. But we want that brand of intellectual dynamism from our science fiction, to speak to us in metaphor and ground us in reality. Here we have a world of fully realized characters caught up in a compelling story. Battlestar Galactica delivers.

Torchwood - A Review

“Torchwood. Outside the government, beyond the police. Tracking down alien life and arming the human race against the future. The 21st century is when everything changes. And you gotta be ready.”

In this spin-off from the new Doctor Who, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), born in the 51st century - last seen traveling with the good Doctor - joined the Torchwood Institute in 21st century Cardiff. It’s apparently a little known secret that of all the cities in England, Cardiff happens to be on a rift in time and space. Founded by Queen Victoria to deal with extra-terrestrial and supernatural threats, a new merry band of misfits and loners surround Captain Jack: Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), Owen Harper (Burn Gorman), Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori), and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd). Ironically, I thought Barrowman played Captain Jack too over-the-top on Doctor Who, yet on Torchwood, he seems too restrained. The rest of the crew’s acting chops lie on just this side of soap opera-esque. Yet, for all of their stiff recitations, the stories are compelling enough to sweep us along.

“That’s all we are in the end, a pile of boxes.” –Gwen

The answer to the question “what is Torchwood?” is reality. When we truly are what’s going on around us, behind the scenes of our built in perception filters: how we engage and interpret the world, what’s convenient to believe, what we’d rather deny because we don’t want to believe it to terrible fantastic or childish to believe.

The show systematically removes God from the equation of life, choosing to look for its answers in logic, science, and mankind’s potential. “I spent my life believing in stupid stories. I’ve wasted my life,” former Torchwood member, Suzy (Indira Varma) says. Once you do that, everything seems like rubbish.

Which means that in addition to an underlying fear of the alien, the central conceit of the show tends to revolve around what happens after death. To look at life for what it is, to reflect on its meaning and our significance. The take home lesson being that we’re to appreciate the now, the little things, in order to make a difference and prepare ourselves.

“There’s something in the dark. And its moving.” –Suzy

Despite its strident professed atheism, the show can’t help but meditate on spiritual matters. After death, there is nothing, the resurrected Suzy explains to the ever skeptical Gwen. Which leads them to speculate what the point of “it all” is. “This is: driving through the dark. All the stupid tiny stuff. We’re just animals howling in the night because it’s better than silence.” We cling to what is important in life, relationships and community, because we’re little more than “creatures clinging together in the cold” in light of some existential terror.

We often sense, if not experience, an existential terror. A gnawing emptiness that claws at our souls. A darkness, the deep, that threatens to suck the joy for all aspects of our lives, that can lead to a spiraling sourness to life that makes us want to crawl into bed and never get out. Some philosophers call this a “God-sized hole” that we try to fill with all manner of distraction, from the pursuit of materialism and the trappings of success to family and relationships. “Do you think knowing the answers would make you feel better?” Captain Jack asks, knowing that we fear the alien we don’t understand. The truth is, God is a dangerous (alien) terror. We want a God we can control and understand. By losing the idea of what it means to have a fear of the Lord, we end up trivializing God. And there is a fearful element to holiness.

We see all the crap of life and wonder if that’s all there is. However, there is more to life, “brilliant stuff”, that once we’re aware of, we can’t go back to any other life because reality gets inside you. With humanity created in the image of God and declared “good”. As image-bearers, we have inherent worth. The Fall becomes about not living up to that potential, what we were created to be. This impacts our view of the Gospel, as it attains a more holistic dimension. It becomes about seeking wholeness, humans to be restored in all the dimensions of humanity, being fully human.

In this X-Files meets Doctor Who, Torchwood is rife with thought provoking themes as well as frank language and sexual charge. It maintains an air of mystery and walks the line of being fun without falling into campiness. What do you think? Want to join up?

Doctor Who (Season One) - A Review

I’ll admit: I’m a closet Doctor Who fan. I have been for a couple of decades now. Mind you, I stopped somewhere shy of walking around with a ridiculously long scarf and handing out jelly babies to everyone I met. For the uninitiated, Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction television series in the world (listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as such). The show featured effects so cheesy they made Star Trek: The Original Series look like The Matrix.

The mysterious Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels about in his space/time craft, the Tardis, to distant planets as well as back and forth throughout pivotal points in Earth’s history. He often enlists assistants in his crusading battle against alien menaces, encountering all manner of lifeforms, from Daleks to Cybermen. Though I hadn’t been as tied to the show as I was when Tom Baker portrayed the good doctor, I was still sad to hear about the shows cancellation.

And just like the Doctor’s ability to regenerate into a new body, I was just as elated to hear that the show was back on the air.
